How do you back comb your hair so that it doesn't look like a rat's nest and actually stays there for the whole day? I can never get it right.

Well, it takes a little practice.

You can use any comb, but if you can use a backcombing comb, or brush, that works the best.

And there are different kinds of backcombing you can do, depending on what look you’re going for.

If you’re going for a padded look- like trying to create a “poof”, hold the hair out, lightly hairspray the piece and start backcombing at the base. Work your way up the strand, pushing the hair down into the root of your hair. When you get done with that section, hairspray, and flip it up towards your face, so it’ll dry and when you flip it down, it’ll add more volume.

For just adding a little volume, take small sections, and work mainly at the base of your hair. Then just follow the rules I just stated. Hairspray, and flip up. I think the most important part for you, will be making sure to leave hair sectioned out to comb over the backcombed part. It’s okay if the backcombing shows, but at least having a little hair to cover will give it a little more of a finished look. And not look like a “rat’s nest” :)

I hope this helped! If you still can’t get it, let me know, and I’ll be glad to walk you through it in more detail!

Good luck!

how do you do the pony braid hair braid there are no instructions?

So I’m not for sure what one you’re talking about, but I found one I posted a few days ago with the braid on the side of her head, and then it was put up in a pony tail? So that’s the one I’ll write the tutorial for. :)

Her hair has a lot of texture to it. It’s not supposed to be a super slick look. It can be messy. So part out a section of hair on the side of your head, and backcomb the hair a little. Just to make it look a little messy. Then, just start french braiding your hair back, and once you have it braided to the back of your head, pin it off. Grab the rest of your hair and kind of put it up messily with a hair rubber band.

Then, take the braid and pull it back towards the pony tail. Wrap the last bit of the braid around the rubber band to cover it and pin the ends of the hair underneath the pony tail to hide it.

You can backcomb the base of the pony tail to give it more texture, but thats the basics of it. Ill repost the picture after I post this so you can see which one I’m talking about.

Let me know if you have more questions! :)

what is the best mascara to use to get a full and long look

I use Paula’s Choice Illicit Lash Maximum Impact Mascara. It helps add volume, and length. It goes on kind of wet, but you can build layers upon layers and it won’t go anywhere. I love it. And it’s $10 so it’s not crazy expensive either :)

Maybe give that a shot? I’ve tried a lot of mascaras and this seems to be the best one out of all of them!

Good luck!

I’m guessing its the eye tutorial from yesterday? Or a hair tutorial?

Try to get your computer to zoom in. If you can’t get that to work, feel free to let me know what tutorial it is, and I’ll just type it out myself :)

I need a quick simple hairdo for my straight boring hair, it does curl but i want something cute for my formal. Any suggestions.?

Well I usually do my own hair for formals or dinners. Even when I was in high school, I did my own hair for prom. That was probably the easiest hairdo out there.

I back combed a ton of hair on the back crown of my head. Smoothed it down, and pulled it into a “poof”. Once you pin that into place, you take a layer of hair from the surrounding areas, and the sides of your hair and pin those back to cover the “poof”. I got cute hair pins to use for the last 2 pins that I needed. And voila!

I’ll post a picture so you can get a better look :)

do you have any tips for gaining weight ?

Oh jeez…for GAINING weight? I’m usually trying to do the opposite!

But my sister has to gain weight so I’ll just give you some ideas we use for her.

Eat lots of protein. Workout and build muscle. You don’t want the weight you gain to be in fat. Set an amount of calories you want to hit each day, and make sure you hit it. If you need a bowl of ice cream or a krispy kreme at the end of the day, do that. But make sure you’re mainly eating healthy, and still getting your healthy fats in. (nuts, etc)

Try that kind of stuff. But lift weights and workout to build muscle. Hope this helps!

I think that they definitely should put an individual link for each post; albeit most of themes/templates on Tumblr are hard to find it. (Mine is the same way, and had to tell how it is to our hair stylists as a matter of fact) Hope people will ask you WITH a link from now on, because a question that is unanswered could be very frustrating!

I agree. Because one of the purposes of the blog is to answer everyones questions! So if I can’t, it’s frustrating for even me!

I’ll try to find a program on here that helps with that. Thank you for the input :) Let me know if you think of anything else!

Do you have any tips on growing out your hair? Mine used to be quite long, but I had to cut it because I had horrifying split ends. It's about 5 in past my shoulders now, but it's taking forever to grow back. Is there any product that could possibly enhance the growth rate that you know of?

Umm…other than the products I posted about earlier- the Schwarzkopf Sealed Ends and the Biotin pills, there’s not much you can do. Try to not use much heat. Using it as sparingly as possible, and continuing with weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioning treatments or the hot oil treatment I talked about earlier. Just try to pamper your hair. I’m currently trying to grow mine out as well. It just takes patients and lots of care and product! :)

Good luck!!

Hey, totally enjoy your blog! Awesome. This is totally non-beauty-related question; why people ask you a question that there's no resource? I've seen this convo all the time: "How do you do this?" "Do wha?"

Haha I know- I think that they try to put the picture in the question? But it might not submit since you can’t submit pictures?

I feel bad because obviously they have questions about something! How about, from now on- comment on the picture and then send me a message saying you commented-and I’ll answer back. That way EVERYONE knows what we’re talking about :)

Thanks for pointing that out! I was just thinking the same thing!

And thanks for the blog love :) Let me know if theres ever anything you want to see!

whats the best solution for split ends?

Trimming your hair every few weeks. But there are products you can use in your hair that help protect against them.

I love Schwarzkopf Sealed Ends. Use about a dime size amount and apply it to the middle to end of your hair.

It’s a great heat protectant, and it helps prevent split ends.

You can also try doing some deep conditioning treatments. That’ll help keep your hair healthy too.

Hope this helps!

I just saw the post for eye makeup, and I don't know how to figure out the shape of my eyes. How would I go about doing that? And is there any way I can get my hair to grow faster, I can't afford to get my hair cut right now, and I know that's one thing I need to do, but is there anything else I can do?

I’ll post a tutorial for that in a moment :) Just pictures of each kind of eye, and just kind of look at your eyes in the mirror and compare them to the picture.

And for cheap ways to get your hair to grow faster, do a scalp massage, heat up some extra virgin olive oil in the microwave for about 30 seconds and massage it into your scalp. Plastic wrap it to your head and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Then wash it out. Use LOTS of shampoo. You may have to wash it a few times. Just don’t want to leave it greasy!

And just try to stay away from using heat on your hair as much as possible.

Once you get a hair cut, keep getting it trimmed every few weeks, and try taking Biotin. It helps your hair, skin and nails.

Hope this helped!

hey, love the blog! I was wondering if you could do a tutorial type thing for how to get kim kardashian type hair? especially if my hair is starting off really curly (think taylor swift, but with tighter curls) I can't straighten it first, because then it will stay straight and won't curl properly. thank you! :)

I have the same problem :) Let’s see if the way I do it, works for you!

Okay- So wash your hair and blow dry it with your fingers. Try to kind of pull the hair out (you’re trying to pull the curl out a little). A brush stretches it too much. So just use your fingers. And it’s alright if it gets frizzy. The curling iron will fix that :)

If your hair isn’t completely dry, let it air dry the rest of the way. That’s what I do.

Next, heat up a curling iron. Depending on how long your hair is. I use a 3/4 inch barrel. I have hair just past the shoulder. For me, anything bigger and the curls fall out.

Section your hair. Just release a section about the width of your iron. Then, the most important part. Start the curling iron as close as you can to the root of your hair. Then slowly move the iron down the length of your hair. Then just curl up!

Continue to do this with the rest of your hair. When you get to the top layer, I usually take my flat iron, and start at the root of my hair, and go down about 2 inches with it. Then I curl the ends. It just gives it a smoother, more finished look.

You can use the flat iron wherever when you’re done curling. The side pieces, bangs, any natural curl left near the root (just make sure if you do this, don’t move down the entire hair shaft. Just the part that needs straightening.)

Hair spray it all.

Then you can do a few things.

For more defined curls, you can just finger them through.

I usually take a soft bristle brush and brush them through. It gives them a softer look.

Hope this helped!! Let me know if you have any more questions!

I'm thinking of getting my hair permanently straightened, but I have no idea how to get that done. I know the brazilian blowout uses formaldhyde, so i'd like to avoid that. Got any reasonably priced suggestions for straightening treatments?

YES!! I am SO glad you asked me this question! :)

Because…I just had a new treatment done to my hair a few months ago and fell in love with it. And now I can share it with you!

Its called GK Hair Taming System.

It uses Juvexin to tame and calm your hair cuticle, but uses no harsh chemicals. And the best part is, it lasts for up to 5 months! I had mine done months ago, and I had kinky curls. Now when I let it air dry, still after months, it’s wavy with a few curls. It makes your hair look so healthy and amazing. It essentially restores your hair.

At my salon, it runs about $125 a treatment. And it includes the shampoo and conditioner you use after you get the treatment. Sounds pricy, but think about it- it lasts for 5 months. Thats $25 a month!

I’ll post the link to the website after I post this. But I am a die hard fan of this product! I swear by it. Take a look and see if you’d be interested! I’ll be glad to answer any questions you have about it, or any other products :)

I had a random case of acne about six months ago. it's all gone, but when I'm wearing no makeup it still shows blemishes. could you recommend any amazing night cremes, etc that will restore my skin to its flawless condition the fastest?

Well you would probably benefit from first starting out with a chemical peel or microdermabrasion. Those will take off the dead layers of skin and leave fresh layers of skin to work with. Then, if all of your acne is gone, you can use Bio-oil. Be careful to watch for breakouts though, because it is oil, and can clog up your pores. Just make sure when you rinse it off, to try to use a gentle exfoliator. That way it continues to get the dead skin cells off, and you’re constantly applying to new skin, and you’ll be sure to get all the oil off. That’s the best I’ve heard of. Try that, and if it doesn’t work, let me know! I’ll try to do some more research for you!

where can I find the tutorial for makeup for hooded eyes?

As just a basic tutorial- Use a light color on the movable lid. Avoid dark colors because they will make your eye lid disappear completely or look even MORE deep set. You can use a medium color on the middle of the lid, or just above the crease,  just avoid shimmers there. Use lots of mascara, and make sure to keep your eyeliner thin, so that it doesn’t have the same effect as the dark eyeshadows. Hope this helped!!

which would be the best concealer for dray skin ? (:

You’ll want to find something that adds moisture. Not takes it out. So I use Aqua Smooth makeup my Cover Girl, and that works well. But as far as ratings, if you’d be willing to spend the money, Clinique Line-Smoothing Concealer is the top rated for dry skin. It’s about $25 a tube, but keep in mind, you don’t use much. So it’ll last a while. Maybe go to a department store and have them test it out on you, and see how you like it. They won’t charge you for that. :) Hope this helps!

Hey, I have damaged hair and I know you've advised others to deep condition, so how do you do that? Like products needed etc. BTW I'm from the UK if that helps with products etc.

Well, there are a few options. You could go to a beauty supply store- we have Sally’s here, but if you don’t have that, anything similar will help. So just ask for help, anything at a beauty supply store is professional quality and will do wonders for your hair. OR you could go to a salon, and get a reconstructor. You hair will literally feel amazing. I should have mentioned that in the last anon question I got. Redken has a really good line of reconstructors but any others that are at a salon are good too. Also at a salon, they usually sell product. And with product, there will be deep conditioners! Stylists LOVE selling product, because we make commission off it. So they will be more than glad to help. Just read the instructions on the bottle of the deep conditioner, but you usually leave it in for about 5-10 minutes, and rinse out.

Hope this helped! At least you have a few options!

im african american. so how much would it cost to get that micro thing.

Well, they usually start around $350. But since you’re african american, you could just get them braided in. It would be less expensive and less damaging to your hair. I know someone who has a full weave and you can’t even tell that they’re extensions. I’d look into that before the micro-bead extensions

Jan 31, 2012
shew good. mine are kind of uncomfortable. and i dont like that. also should i just get them braided into my hair next time?? or like is there somthing im missing. im trying to let my natural hair grow. so i braid my hair underneath and clip them in on top. you cant tell. its more comfertable that what anyway. but still. idk. just give me some tips

Okay no problem :)

I’m sorry they’re uncomfortable! But okay, so as far as braiding them in, it depends on what your hair type is. If it’s african american hair, it’s easier to braid them in. If you have caucasian, asian, indian, etc hair, I wouldn’t braid them in.

Almost anyone except African Americans’ hair is too slick to braid. Once your braid it in, it’d pull out. Plus it’d be uncomfortable. African Americans are lucky that their hair’s texture can support it because it’s much easier!

So lets say you’re in the caucasian hair group. Have you tried back combing your hair before putting the extensions in? Just take a fine tooth comb, and push the hair towards your scalp. It’ll create a “bedding” or “padding” for the extension to grab onto. They will stay a lot better and be more comfortable.

If you’re willing to spend more money on them, you could get Micro-bead hair extensions. They take little sections of hair, and connect it to your own hair, and melt a bead usually made of Keratin, and they stay in for about 4-5 months. That’ll give your own hair enough time to grow more too.

There are a lot of choices. And I hope this helped! Like I said, try backcombing the hair where you’re going to place the clip-in. It’ll probably help a lot!

Let me know if you have anymore questions!

How do I rice puffy eyelids? Also, I have an olive complexion with dark eyes, what are some neutral colors to use

If you mean erase puffy eyelids, cold compresses! Yes, cucumber really does work! Also, Preparation H is great for under eye lid bags. Try that and see if it works!! Just remember, cool shrinks warm/swollen.

And for olive complexion with dark eyes, lots of copper and gold colors. They will make your eyes pop! Greens also look really good. Try those out and see how you like them! I think they’ll look great

Is there are any way i can style my hair to be big; like big curls? Maybe a type of perm of something? Also my hair is a damaged and unhealthy looking :( Is there anything that can help out with that as well?

Well it honestly depends on what kind of curls you want!

Lets say you want Taylor Swift curls, you could get a foam perm rod perm.

Now if you want more like Kim Kardashian curls, that’s done with hot rollers or large barrel curling irons.

It just depends on your preference! If you want a tutorial of how to get the Kim K look, just let me know and I’ll be glad to write one out :)

And for damaged and unhealthy hair, deep condition. And CUT. Go to a salon and just ask them to take off the dead ends. Then deep condition about once a week, and try to use as little heat as possible.

Hair grows a half an inch a month, and if you’re trying to grow your hair out, or just keep it growing, you could just get the ends trimmed off (1/4 inch or less) and it’ll keep on growing!

Dead ends split the hair shaft, and cause it to break off, which is why you should get regular trims.

So start out with a trim and a deep conditioning treatment, and if that doesn’t work, let me know! We’ll figure something out!

how to apply eye makeup

Well there are many ways to apply eye makeup. It just depends on your eye shape, and what you want the final product to look like.

If you have…

Round eyes: You want to create more depth. So apply a medium to dark shade on your entire lid, and if you want to elongate your eyes, extend the shadow out on the outer lid, and down onto the bottom lash line. Basically a cat eye.

Deep set eyes: This is the kind of eye that I have, and it’s frustrating sometimes, but have figured out how to make it work! You should use a brighter, more bold color to bring out the eyes, and then apply a shimmer or lighter shade to the top of your lid and towards your brow bone to create the illusion of more lid. Make sure to add a medium tone to the crease to define the eye.

Prominent eyes: Apply a dark, matte color to the eyes, extending out to cover the entire lid. Add a light color right beneath your brow bone to highlight.

Small eyes: The key to remember is dark colors close the eye, light colors open them up. So with small eyes, you want to stick to light colors. Use a darker shade however, to apply only in the crease of your eye to help define it. Use a highlighter on the brow bone to help increase the look of more lid.

Almond eyes: Use a medium shade on your entire lid, and a darker color on the outer edge of the lid. Bring the eyeshadow down onto your lower lash line, and blend the two together. Remember to highlight the brow bone.

Hooded eyes: Stay away from shimmers. Use only matte colors, and stay with the lighter tones, but you can use a darker shade to contour in the crease of the eye.

Asian eyes: To create dimension, apply a light shade into the inner lid and continue by applying a darker shade on the middle and outer lid. Create a crease and give the eyes depth by applying a medium-dark shade into 1/4-1/2 way thought the crease from the outer corner. Highlight under the brow to open up eye. For those who have “hidden” crease lines, use the same technique but extend the colors slightly higher above the crease so they will be more visible. For those without a crease at all, you can either not apply the dark color used for the crease, or you can use it to create an illusion of a crease.

Once you have your eye shape figured out, apply eyeshadow. The next step is eyeliner. The tutorial for figuring out the eyeshadow for your eyes should help you figure out how to apply the eyeliner on the upper lid. Or if you don’t know what to do, just follow the general rule- follow your lash line. For the bottom, I line my water line. It’s sensitive at first but gradually your eyes get used to it. Or you can lightly stroke the bottom lash line with eyeliner. Just don’t do it heavily or thick. Just a light brush of it.

For mascara, start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the brush up the lash. That will create the look of fuller lashes. To create length, use the brush and apply it to the ends. The mascara builds on top of itself. Just be careful to not do it too much- don’t want spider lashes!

That’s the basic tutorial of how to apply eye makeup. If anyone wants a more in depth review, brushes, primers, highlighters, etc. Let me know and I’ll be glad to write one!

Hope this helped!

So my hair is horrid, it's straight, but I want wavy hair, but every way i try looks odd after a couple of hours. Any suggestions? Also, my eyes change colour a lot, they're naturally grey with hazel flecks, but change to green and blue, any ideas on what eye shadow to wear? Finally (Sorry this is long xD) I'm terrible at doing liquid eyeliner, and tips/tricks?

Okay I have a few ideas :) First of all, use a root lifter. Straight hair tends to be pretty flat, so if you have this problem, use a root lifter. I love the Paul Mitchell Extra Body daily-boost. Just spray it around your crown area at the root and massage it in. Don’t use too much though. 1 squirt per area and about 4-5 areas.

Second, when you want it wavy, don’t blow dry it. Using a brush will only help pull out what curl you have in there. When you hair is air dried, you can use a 3 barrel curling iron, or a regular curling iron, with a strong hold hair spray. With hair like yours, hair spray will be your new best friend! I’ll repost some beach wave tutorials done with curling irons after I finish this.

Also, you could do sock curls! I’ll post the tutorial for that as well. That you do with wet or damp hair, and when you wake up in the morning, use hair spray!

If you really want curls, you could always get a perm. I know that sounds bad, but there are perms that give you only waves. I can’t tell you how many perms I’ve done, and how many girls that have come into my salon that want beach waves, or Taylor Swift curls. If you go into a salon, tell them you want a perm done with large foam rods.

As for the eye color, you can use almost any color! If you want to pop the grey, dark colors will be best. Dark greens, turquoise, burgundy, black, etc. And then also use a lightener (pearl color) in your tear ducts to brighten your eyes/pop the grey even more. If you want to pop the green- use reds and purple, if you want to pop the blue, use browns.

And for the eye liner, when I first started using liquid, I found liquid eye liner that had a pretty stiff brush. It helps keep your line more straight since your hand has more stability with the brush. I use Almay Intense i-Color liquid liner. I have hazel eyes, and LOVE the color. It’s black liner, and I swear by it. You could use any of the Intense i-color palettes because of your eye color, but that’s up to you which one you want to use!

To keep the line straight, I’ve known some people who use tape, and that seems to work pretty well. If the stiff brush doesn’t work, or you want to use both, there’s nothing wrong with using tape!

I hope this helped!! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi! So I am pretty strange to make up- too much to do and I am am always running around. I was watching a make up tutorial the other day but I got a little intimidated because it was a lot. I want to know what are the basics to begin- concealer, toner, etc?

Hi! That’s completely understandable to be intimidated! Makeup should be fun, not something to worry or stress over! Let me break it down by area of the face, and I’m going to just focus on the basics. It’ll be a 5 minute face:

Foundation: Every face is different. You should assess what kind of coverage your face needs. You could do a tinted moisturizer for light coverage (If you don’t have many breakouts), a medium coverage (Pressed powder, compact, or liquid), or heavy coverage (Thick liquid foundation- most people don’t need this). I use medium coverage and I use a compact foundation. Just take the sponge and start patting the makeup on your face. Just apply it until it covers all the red blemishes and your skin tone looks even. Don’t cake it on.

Powder: After you apply the foundation, take loose powder and just brush it all over your face. That sets your foundation for the day so it won’t wear off.

Cheeks: Choose a bright pink. It’ll look too bright for your face- but you’re only going to sweep it on, and it’ll lighten up your face. Apply it only on the apples of your cheeks and a little but up your cheek bone. If you smile, you’ll be able to find both easily.

Eyes: Apply the eyeshadow first- just remember, if you want your eye color to pop, use the opposite color of eyeshadow. There are different ways you can apply it, but in this case, just sweep it across your eyelid. Don’t forget the eyeliner and mascara! With those, you can apply it however you feel comfortable. Just try to get the eyeliner as close to the eyelashes as possible.

Lips: There are TONS of choices for your lips. Whatever your preference is- chap stick, lip gloss, lip stick, etc. If you need help picking out a color to suit your skin tone, feel free to go to a makeup counter and ask for help! You don’t have to buy anything from them. You can try it on and go to the store and buy the cheap version. But it definitely helps!

I hope this helps! I know it’s a lot. But it’s easy. I promise! And if you have any questions, or want specifics on anything, I’m always here!

So, I have mostly blue eyes, but one of my eyes is also, like, three-fourths brown. This is something really unique that I like about my eyes, but I never know how to apply makeup to make both the blue and the brown pop. Any ideas? ps, I am also rather pale :/

That’s really cool! Well what I would do, is use a pink/purple eyeshadow (for the brown in your eyes) and then use a smokey grey or brown eyeliner. That way, the eyeliner helps pop out the blue in your eyes, but the eyeshadow helps bring out the brown as well. You should also switch it around, and do a smokey eye with a plum colored eyeliner and it’d have the same effect! Hope that helps!
